#001 Caren van Herwaarden
Na de kunstacademie kreeg Caren van Herwaarden toegang tot de anatomische collectie van de Leidse Universiteit, waar ze het menselijk lichaam tekende in variaties van kracht, ontbinding en verval. Dit onderzoek vormt de basis van haar werk.
Voor Van Herwaarden is het verbeelden van menselijkheid essentieel, het lichaam speelt hierin een prominente rol. Empathie is in haar werk een centraal thema, want je wilt autonoom, maar niet alleen zijn. Om intimiteit en inleving te vergroten, is haar fysiek en tastbaar: ‘...Je moet het ervaren voordat je het begrijpt.’
Van Herwaarden studeerde aan de AKI en de Rijksakademie, haar werk is opgenomen in de collecties van een aantal musea, bedrijven en particuliere verzamelaars. Ze is werkzaam als adviseur bij ‘DIA’, waar ze professionele kunstenaars begeleidt. Ze geeft regelmatig lezingen.

After attending the art academy, Caren van Herwaarden gained access to the anatomical collection of Leiden University, where she drew the human body in variations of strength, decay, and decomposition. This research forms the foundation of her work.
For Van Herwaarden, depicting humanity is essential, with the body playing a prominent role. Empathy is a central theme in her work, as one wants to be autonomous but not alone. To enhance intimacy and empathy, her work is physical and tangible: ‘...You must experience it before you can understand it.’
Van Herwaarden studied at the AKI and the Rijksakademie, her work is included in the collections of a number of museums, companies and private collectors. She works as an advisor at ‘DIA’, where she mentors professional artists. She regularly gives lectures.
